Missing Persons update from Nestoras Nestoros

The Greek Cypriot Member on the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), Nestoras Nestoros, updated the Federation’s Secretariat on the latest news on the missing persons issue. Mr Nestoros spoke about the challenges that the CMP face in their work to determine the fate of the missing persons in Cyprus. 2001 people went missing in Cyprus during the periods 1963-4 and 1974; 740 have been identified by the CMP so far. Mr Nestoros explained that as time goes by it becomes more difficult to locate new burial sites as witnesses grow older and pass away. Another major challenge in locating burial sites is that many seem to have been moved and remains relocated over time –  the CMP hopes that the latest advanced technology can assist them by analysing topography and landscapes to observe whether they have changed over time.
