DESCRIPTION:Viewing by appointment only | Free entry | Please email info@helleniccentre.org or call 020 7487 5060 \nMonochords is a suite of linocuts by London-based Italian filmmaker and visual artist Chiara Ambrosio\, in response to Yannis Ritsos’ collection of one-line poems by the same title.  \nYannis Ritsos\, a Greek poet\, communist\, and active member of the Greek Resistance during World War II\, composed the 336 Monochords in August of 1979\, in the space of one month\, following the end of one of his many political exiles on the island of Samos. Each line is a poignant and essential observation of an instant in time\, at once ephemeral and resonant; the resulting collection of poems reads as a personal archive of time past\, present and future\, offering\, in the poet’s own words\, keys to his own poetic sensibility.   \nChiara Ambrosio had been carrying a copy of the Monochords with her for over a decade; a compass\, a torch and indeed a key\, offering inspiration\, direction and companionship as she developed her own poetic vision. One day in 2020\, as the pandemic began to spiral out of control\, she turned to the book once more and felt compelled to make images in response to the monochords: not illustrations\, nor translations\, more of an experiment in entering the space opened up by the poem\, and seeing what would resonate and emerge from there; how that exploration could be rendered in line and shape-like going fishing at night in the sea of Ritsos’ words\, a daily ritual\, that accompanied the artist along a strange year of exile from life.  \n  \nViewing will be open by appointment only during Hellenic Centre opening hours. SUMMARY:Love\, War and the Self in Renaissance and Modern Cypriot Poetry
DESCRIPTION:The lectures of this session by Marina Rodosthenous-Balafa and Nikoletta Hadjipavlou will explore two important aspects of Cypriot poetry \nFocusing on the anonymous Cypriot Petrarchan poetic Collection of the sixteenth century\, Dr Rodosthenous (University of Nicosia) will discuss Cypriot Renaissance poetry and the representation of the lover-poet who experiences unrequited love for his idealized beloved. Through particular figures of speech\, such as metaphors\, antitheses and paradoxes\, the Sisyphean archetype will emerge and reveal connections with the Neoplatonic philosophy and theory of human perfectibility of the time. \nWith reference to works by Kyriakos Charalambides and Niki Marangou\, Dr Hadjipavlou will explore how the two poets reconstruct the past through the lens of the present. Charalambides (b.1940) and Marangou (1948-2013) are two of the most renowned and prolific Cypriot writers of their generation. Born in Cyprus in the 1940s\, they experienced important events in the history of their homeland first-hand. They both experienced the Cypriot struggle for liberation of 1955-59 as children and the Turkish invasion of 1974 as adults. Unavoidably\, a big part of their work is primarily framed by the political and historical events which have marked the modern history of Cyprus and which are expressed in their poetic work through an overall view of the history of Cyprus and more specifically through a journey to the Frankish Kingdom of Cyprus and the Venetian\, Ottoman and British rule on the island. \nIn collaboration with the Society for Modern Greek Studies

She was awarded this years Fortnum + Mason ‘Cookery Writer of the Year’ award\, and the Guild of Food Writers ‘Recipe Writer of the Year’ in 2020. \nGrowing up above her grandparents’ Greek Cypriot taverna in Tufnell Park\, she developed a love of cooking from the recipes passed down to her. She worked on Jamie Oliver’s food team for 12 years – styling\, developing and writing recipes for everything from TV to magazines\, campaigns to ads. \nShe has written 3 books – Stirring Slowly\, Taverna and Nistisima\, which is released March 2022. SUMMARY:Gender and History in Modern Cypriot Writing
DESCRIPTION:Dr Ioannidou will explore how the trauma of Cypriot history is explored and filtered through the lens of gender and memory in prose and poetry of post 1960 Cyprus. This talk aims to provide an overview of contemporary fiction written by Cypriot women and\, more specifically\, look into the works of Constantia Soteriou\, Nasia Dionysiou\, and Louiza Papaloizou. Following in the footsteps of the acclaimed author Niki Marangou\, these three authors address historical and political issues in their fiction. \nDr Kakkoufa will discuss the ways in which gender and sexuality have not been examined after the Invasion and the centrality of language in encoding and highlighting these aspects. \nIn collaboration with the Society for Modern Greek Studies

She was previously Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting\, Director General for Economics at the Department for Business\, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Joint Head of the UK Government Economic Service. Before that she was Partner at the accounting and consulting firm KPMG after senior economic positions in banking and the oil sector. She holds a number of academic posts and is a Fellow and Council member of the UK Academy for Social Sciences\, a Fellow of the Society of Professional Economists and a Companion of the British Academy of Management and is a frequent media commentator on UK and international economic\, monetary and political and social issues.. She is co-founder of GoodCorporation\, a company set up to advise on business ethics\, a patron of the charities Pro Bono Economics and Working Chance; a member of the Advisory Board of the central banking think-tank OMFIF; on the advisory group of Better Statistics CIC; and a fellow of the Radix Centre for Business\, Politics and Society. Her books include: “Greekonomics: The Euro crisis and Why Politicians Don’t Get It”; “It’s the Economy\, Stupid- Economics for Voters”\, with Ross and Urwin; “Redesigning Manufacturing”\, with Nielsen and Beverland; and “Women vs Capitalism”. \n\n\n\n\n\nIan Harwood – Economic and Investment Adviser \nIan Harwood is a leading and award-winning practitioner in the City\, focused upon global economic and financial developments. He has in recent years undertaken a wide range of economics-focussed\, investment advisory and educational roles. He is currently Economic Adviser at Redburn and also acts as Independent Investment Adviser to a number of institutional investors and is a Trustee Director of the UBS Pension Scheme. He is a Fellow of the Society of Professional Economists\, having served on the Society’s Council from 2008 to 2017\, where he advocated substantive changes in the way economics is taught in British universities and has been an employer representative on the QAA’s Economics subject benchmark statement committee. He also led the creation of the Society of Professional Economists’ Continuing Professional Development programme and is currently the Society’s Book Reviews Editor. \n\n\n\n\n\nNikos Konstandaras – Columnist and Psychotherapist \nNikos Konstandaras is a columnist at the newspaper Kathimerini. He is the founding editor of Kathimerini’s English Edition\, which is published as a supplement to the New York Times in Greece and Cyprus\, and he edited it from 1998 to 2017. He was managing editor of the Greek edition of Kathimerini from 2004 to 2017 and a contributing op-ed writer for the New York Times International Edition. He studied Ancient Greek (MA\, Wits.\, S. Africa) and worked as a correspondent for The Associated Press in Athens from 1989 to 1997\, covering the broader region. He has trained as a therapist at the Hellenic Institute for Group Analytic and Family Psychotherapy.
