SUMMARY:Byzantine Music: an Ode to God and its Path through Time
DESCRIPTION:What is byzantine music\, where is it used\, how does it sound? The presentation aims at bringing this rare and unique music genre which has been heard for centuries in all orthodox churches closer to you and take you on a journey through its history\, tradition and mainly its sound with live chanting. \nIn the event organised by the non-profit society “Omilos Eksipiretiton” from Greece\, some historical elements about byzantine music as a distinctive and vibrant genre of religious music will be presented and\, through an interactive experiential workshop\, the participants will experience the joy of expression through music and try out their own abilities at chanting! \nThe main speaker is Mr. Lazaros Koumentakis\, Music teacher and Theologist/ Protopsaltis\, along with Ms Evangelia Gkioni\, Psychotherapist-Writer and Mrs Marianna Smyrniotou\, Art and Creative Director of Megas Seirios Publications.

DESCRIPTION:Parikiaki is pleased to announce that Christos Menidiatis will be performing live at our dinner & dance on Saturday 15 October 2022\, at the newly refurbished main hall of the Cypriot Centre\, Earlham Grove\, N22 5HJ. \nChristos is the son of the legendary laiko singer Mihalis Menidiatis. He began singing and recording songs in the late 90’s\, under his real surname\, Kalogranis.The talented artist released his first single Gia Mena in 2004. \nA year later\, he released his debut album Sta Asteria Kano Mia Efhi\, which became highly successful; it featured the singles Enikiazete\, Oi Kiriakes\, Mono Ta Matia Sou and Posa Parapano. \nIn 2007\, Menidiatis released Vima Vima\, which included the popular tracks I Kalyteri Fili\, Ftaine Ta Glika Sou Matia\, Tha Vro Tin Akri Mou and Katse Fronima. \nThe singer went on to release a live album and more hit singles including favourites Adinamia Mou\, Hamos Tha Gini\, Ta Kleidia\, Ta Kala Paidia\, Se Perimena and Kaigomai. \nHe has also collaborated with other Greek artists such as Master Tempo and Kings. \n2019 saw the release of the popular single Stin Avli Tis\, followed by Erotevmenos Mazi Sou\, with lyrics by Petros Iacovides\, which hit the airwaves earlier this year. \nDon’t miss a great night out with Christos Menidiatis and his unique voice. \nFor tickets and further information\, please call 020 8342 5853.

SUMMARY:Story Telling in Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Story telling in mathematics can be a fascinating way to draw connections between mathematical discoveries (or inventions!) and the needs of the times they were emerging. Mathematics has been responding to people’s needs and curiosities for centuries and this is often forgotten. Ioanna Georgiou will present some of the stories used in her teaching and workshops\, and feature in “Mathematical Adventures!” (2020) and “Peculiar Deaths of Famous Mathematicians” (2022)\, her two illustrated children’s books. The rationale of the books will be explored in the light of her second book being published in the summer of 2022. There will be a special focus on the stories from the Greek mathematicians featuring in the two books. \nIoanna (possible pronunciation Yo-Anna) is a mathematics educator who finds story telling a fascinating way to communicate mathematical ideas from the times they were emerging. Turning to stories of the past\, with lively characters full of resilience and determination gives a rather comprehensive glimpse of what maths has been doing for us possibly ever since early humans started counting. Ioanna has been using these ideas in her teaching\, masterclasses and workshops. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications\, a Chartered Mathematics Teacher\, Head of Mathematics at St James Senior Girls’ School and author of “Mathematical Adventures!” and “Peculiar Deaths of Famous Mathematicians”. \nBoth books will be on sale at this event \nRSVP required

DESCRIPTION:Along with the rest of the nation\, we were deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 8 September. \n  \nGiven this period of mourning and after careful consideration\, we will not be holding our ‘Celebration of Cyprus’ event as planned on Saturday 17th September. However\, the President of the Republic of Cyprus has expressed his strong desire to return to London for this event as soon as possible and we are already in discussion with his office to establish a new date for this event. We will inform you when a new date is confirmed and we hope that you will be able to join us. \n  \nWe express our apologies for any inconvenience caused by the event’s postponement\, and thank you for your support and understanding. \n\n\nCelebrate the independence of Cyprus and the UK Cypriot community\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIn 2020 the Republic of Cyprus celebrated its 60th anniversary\, a historic occasion for a young\, democratic country. The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK had planned a Gala Dinner to mark this occasion which\, unfortunately\, had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \nTwo years later\, we are proud to be hosting ‘A Celebration of Cyprus’ with H.E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus\, Mr Nicos Anastasiades\, as the Guest of Honour in the final few months of his Presidency. \nThe Gala Dinner will be an occasion for our vibrant diaspora to celebrate both the independence of Cyprus\, as well as the immense contribution of the 300\,000 Britons of Cypriot heritage. \nTickets \nTickets are £70 per person\, which includes a 3-course dinner\, wine with meal\, and live entertainment. \nBook a table \nTables of 8\, 9\, 10\, 11 or 12 people are available and will go on public sale on Monday 4th April. Gotsis (1945 – 2021).\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSPEAKERS \nAndreas Hadjithomas\, Writer – Critic\, former Director of the Cyprus Library \nKaterina Pavlidis – PhD Cand. Slavonic Studies\, Cambridge University \nRenowned soprano Katerina Mina will recite selected poems by Dimitris Th. Gotsis. \nThe event will be in Greek language. \n\n\n\nDemetris Th. Gotsis (1945-2021) was born in Thessaloniki to musician parents. He studied medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki\, before continuing his studies and practice in Germany (1974-1985). In 1986 he moved to Paphos\, Cyprus\, where he worked as a private doctor. After his retirement\, he moved to Nicosia\, focusing on writing and translating\, until his death in April 2021. In 1995\, he received the Cyprus State Award for his work “Easter Garden – Songs on the Imprisoned Graves”. He was associate of the Choir Centre at the Greek Ministry of Culture\, a founding member of the Paphos Poetry and Literature Club\, a member of the Cyprus Writers Union\, Pen Club Cyprus\, and International Literature Critics Union. His poems have been translated in French\, English\, Spanish\, German\, Italian\, Polish\, Finnish\, Bulgarian and Persian. Original poems in German have been included in German anthologies.

DESCRIPTION:NEPOMAK UK\, the Armenian Youth Federation London & the Kings College London Armenian Society are proud to present a joint film screening of the documentary ‘Birlikte’\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nBirlikte (Together) is a documentary created by two young Turkish-Cypriots as an oral testimony of the Armenian refugees that came to Cyprus after the Adana Massacres (1909) and Armenian Genocide (1915-1923) and lived together with Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots in Nicosia. The film explores the memories of those who lived in the Armenian Quarter of Nicosia in the 1960’s\, their experiences of the illegal Turkish invasion in 1974\, and their reactions to the partial lifting of the travel restrictions between the free and occupied areas in 2003. The documentary is in Turkish with English subtitles and lasts 60 minutes. \nThe film screening will start at 12:00 in activity room D of Bush House of King’s College London (Strand Campus). DESCRIPTION:The Cyprus High Commission presents the art-photography exhibition by Cypriot fashion photographer Nikolas Louka “Beyond the Blur”.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nPrivate viewing:\n3 MARCH – 6:30pm | CYPRUS HOUSE\n13 St. James’s Square\, SW1Y 4LB\n\nblur meaning: \n·      verb: make or become unclear or less distinct \n·      noun: a thing that cannot be seen or heard clearly \nNikolas Louka’s show at the Cyprus High Commission\, Beyond the Blur\, repurposes a broad spectrum of photographs taken during the photographer’s decade-long career in fashion\, portrait\, theatre and commercial photography. The exhibition invites us to revisit the art of photography\, to look\, indeed\, beyond the “blur” of the medium’s artifice\, facilitated through lens manipulation\, heavy makeup\, smiles\, veils\, masks; to look beyond the stillness or movement of the body\, and – most importantly for our contemporary Instagram-saturated visual culture – beyond the intense editing of digital technology that has blurred the boundaries between reality and fantasy. \nDuration of exhibition:\n3 – 23 March | Mon-Fri 10:00-16:00\n(book a visit via info@culturalchc.co.uk)\n\n\n\nNikolas Louka (b. Cyprus 1984) is a London based photographer. Nikolas studied photography in Athens\, Greece\, where he lived and worked before moving to London in 2011. His uncomplicated\, raw and dynamic style delivers timeless and arresting photos across a broad spectrum of photography that include fashion\, commercial\, theatre and portraiture. He has collaborated with the Greek National Theatre\, the Greek National Opera\, Vogue Greece\, Marie Claire\, Madame Figaro and has created portraits for major Greek and Cypriot stars. DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate with us the Greek Carnival with Asterakia! \nThis family event is a great opportunity to learn everything about the Greek customs while having fun! \nLots of games\, singing\, dancing with the gaitanaki and much more! The children will have the opportunity to do lots of art and craft activities with a qualified art teacher. \nParents are welcome to help children with the activities! \nEvent suitable for ages: 0 – 10 years old \nPlease note that this event will be mainly in Greek\, but help will provided for those who find this difficult. \nEleni Georgiou studied music and singing in France and UK. For 10 years she worked as a Music Coordinator in schools in London. In addition to this she worked as a professional opera singer\, while performing in London and other European cities. After the birth of her children she created Asterakia. Asterakia is an award-winning fun\, music\, movement\, and drama class in Greek. Asterakia’s curriculum is based through the use of original songs as well as a new arrangement of traditional Greek nursery rhymes\, classical pieces and folk songs. During the lockdown Eleni created a bilingual YouTube Channel (Asterakia with Eleni) in order to make children happy during this difficult time. \nOrganised by The Hellenic Centre
