SUMMARY:UK Cyprus Film Festival 2026 – London Edition (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:In Memory of Director Irena Joannides \n\n\nThis spring\, the UK Cyprus Film Festival 2026 launches the London edition of its programme at Cyprus House (13 St. James’s Square\, SW1Y 4LB)\, as part of the official cultural celebrations of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. \n\n\nThis first chapter of the festival brings together award-winning films by Cypriot women filmmakers whose work speaks with clarity\, sensitivity and courage about memory\, displacement\, identity\, inner life and social constraint. The programme is dedicated to the memory of director Irena Joannides\, whose cinematic voice — poetic\, restrained and deeply humane — continues to resonate within Cypriot cinema and beyond. \n\n\nAcross two carefully curated days\, audiences are invited not only to watch these films\, but to enter into conversation with their creators\, through post-screening Q&As that open space for dialogue\, reflection and shared experience. \n\n\n🎟 Day tickets are available for each date. As seating is limited\, we kindly ask audiences to book only if they are certain they can attend\, allowing as many people as possible to take part. \n\nSunday 26 April 2026 \n\n\nWomen’s Lives\, Unspoken Histories\, Inner Revolutions \n\n\n16:00 – Eleni’s Olives (19’) Directed by Yianna Americanou \n\n\nShot with lyrical simplicity\, Eleni’s Olives is a tender portrait of everyday resilience. Through small gestures and domestic rhythms\, the film reflects on generational memory\, labour and the intimate bonds that sustain life across time. Its quiet observational style allows the personal to become universal. \n\n\n& \n\n\n16:20 – Her Violet Garden (18’) Directed by Irena Joannides \n\n\nA poetic short that distils Joannides’ distinctive cinematic voice\, Her Violet Garden unfolds as an inner landscape — a meditation on fragility\, solitude and emotional endurance. The film’s restrained imagery and delicate pacing speak to the director’s lasting contribution to Cypriot cinema and her ability to express complex inner states with rare subtlety. \n\n\n16:45 – Unwitnessed Memories (60’) Directed by Athena Xenidou \n\n\nBuilt from first-hand testimonies\, Unwitnessed Memories gives voice to those who grew up in the long shadow of 1974. The documentary explores how war\, displacement and silence shape personal identity across generations\, offering a deeply human record of memory\, survival and quiet strength. \n\n\nFollowed by a Q&A with Director Athena Xenidou. \n\n\nShort break \n\n\n18:15 – Pause (96’) Directed by Tonia Mishiali \n\n\nAn award-winning psychological drama\, Pause centres on a woman confronting the confines of routine\, marriage and expectation. With remarkable emotional precision\, the film examines repression\, desire and the cost of silence\, charting an inner awakening that is both unsettling and deeply recognisable. \n\n\nFollowed by a Q&A with Director Tonia Mishiali. \n\n\n\nBooking Information \n\n\n🎟 Tickets are available per day (8 March & 26 April). \n\n\nPlease note that capacity is limited. We kindly ask you to reserve tickets only if you are confident you can attend\, ensuring access for as many audience members as possible.

SUMMARY:Photography and Visual Storytelling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:With Alexis Andreou \n\nAs part of the exhibition THERE IS AN ISLAND and within the wider framework of the UK Cyprus Film Festival\, we are delighted to present a special workshop led by London-based documentary photographer Alexis Andreou. \n\n\nTaking place at 1:00pm\, just ahead of the festival screenings at 4:00pm\, this immersive session creates a meaningful bridge between still and moving image — exploring how narrative is constructed\, sequenced\, and experienced across visual forms. \n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\nThis workshop explores the intersection of documentary photography\, narrative construction\, text\, and the photo book format. Through presentation and discussion\, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how photographic sequences and written language interact to create compelling visual stories. \n\n\nAndreou’s practice focuses on the post-conflict landscape of Cyprus and the impact of displacement on communities shaped by memory and division. Text plays a central role in his work\, often drawing from testimonies and lived experience. His projects frequently culminate in carefully constructed photo books — tangible narrative objects that foster intimacy between image and viewer. \n\n\nThe session will examine: \n\n\n\n\nThe fundamentals of documentary photography and its narrative power \n\n\nKey principles in designing and sequencing photo books \n\n\nTechniques for editing photographs for book form and visual spreads \n\n\nThe dynamic interplay between text and image\, and how meaning shifts when language enters the frame \n\n\n\n\nThe workshop will begin with a presentation before moving into a hands-on group exercise. Participants will work with provided sketchbooks and text excerpts to construct their own visual storytelling sequences. Those who wish are invited to bring their own prints or work-in-progress\, though this is not mandatory. \n\n\nWho Is It For? \n\n\nThis workshop is open to anyone interested in documentary photography and visual storytelling — photographers\, filmmakers\, visual artists\, students\, or those simply curious about how images shape cultural memory. \n\n\nSituated within THERE IS AN ISLAND\, a season reflecting on Cyprus through art\, memory\, and place\, and unfolding just hours before the UK Cyprus Film Festival screenings\, this workshop invites participants to reflect on how stories of landscape\, displacement\, identity\, and testimony are framed — whether through still image or cinema. \n\n\n🎟 Tickets are available via Eventbrite. \n\n\nPlaces are limited and early booking is recommended.

SUMMARY:Comparing Cyprus and Sicily: Scientific Approaches
DESCRIPTION:The international workshop Comparing Cyprus and Sicily: Scientific Approaches takes place at Durham University on 26–27 March 2026\, bringing together scholars from across Europe to explore the long-term historical\, environmental and cultural trajectories of two Mediterranean islands through comparative and interdisciplinary scientific perspectives. \n\n\nCyprus and Sicily\, both shaped by mobility\, exchange\, resource exploitation and layered histories\, offer rich case studies for understanding island societies in the Mediterranean world. Across two days\, the workshop examines themes including prehistoric and historic landscapes\, copper production\, ceramics\, archaeozoology\, archaeobotany and human–environment interactions\, highlighting both parallels and productive contrasts between the two islands. \n\n\nCyprus features prominently throughout the programme\, with a strong presence of Cypriot and Cyprus-based researchers from the University of Cyprus\, the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus\, and international institutions. Their work places Cyprus at the centre of contemporary Mediterranean research\, in dynamic dialogue with parallel case studies from Sicily. \n\n\nThe workshop culminates in the keynote lecture Cyprus and Sicily: Shared Identities by Anastasia Christophilopoulou\, offering a reflective perspective on island identities\, memory and cultural connections across the Mediterranean. \n\n\nThe workshop is supported by Durham University\, the University of Liverpool\, the Leverhulme Trust\, and the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission. \n\n\nProgramme \n\n\nDay 1 — Thursday\, 26 March 2026 \n\n\n09:45–10:00 \n\n\nWelcome and introduction \n\n\nC. de Lisle\, M. SUMMARY:Creative Pathways\, Q&A with Dr Marios Papadopoulos
DESCRIPTION:The Road to Oxford: Journeys\, Music\, and Belonging \n\nReserve a spot via link \n\n\n\nAs part of the Creative Pathways programme accompanying the exhibition George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus\, we are delighted to welcome Marios Papadopoulos\, Cypriot conductor\, educator\, and Founder & Music Director of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra\, for an open public Q&A conversation. \n\n\n\nThe evening takes inspiration from the arc of Dr Papadopoulos’s personal and artistic journey — a journey traced through telling milestones: early musical life\, departure from home\, international encounters\, the decisive transition from piano to podium\, and ultimately the road to Oxford. Like the journey to Ithaca in Constantine P. Cavafy’s poetry\, this road is not only about arrival\, but about formation: the experiences\, detours\, and encounters that shape an artist’s voice and sense of purpose. \n\n\n\nIn conversation\, Dr Papadopoulos will reflect on the paths that led him from Cyprus to London and beyond\, on building an orchestra from vision and conviction\, and on the responsibilities that come with leadership in music. Particular attention will be given to moments of transition — artistic\, personal\, and ethical — that resonate with young creatives\, musicians\, and anyone navigating their own creative pathway. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will also touch on music as a social force: education\, access\, and presence beyond the concert hall\, including the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s long-standing engagement with young people\, schools\, and communities\, as well as its belief in music as a living\, human experience. \n\n\n\nRooted in his enduring bond with Cyprus\, the conversation opens a space to reflect on identity\, diaspora\, and the ways cultural memory travels with us. The event will conclude with an open Q&A\, inviting the audience to take part in a shared exploration of journey\, creativity\, and belonging.

SUMMARY:Artist-Led Curated Tour
DESCRIPTION:THERE IS AN ISLAND III \n\nThe Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission invites audiences to a special Artist-Led Curated Tour of THERE IS AN ISLAND III\, a major group exhibition bringing together 22 British Cypriot artists living and working in the United Kingdom. \n\n\n\nThis guided afternoon offers a rare opportunity to experience the exhibition through the voices of the artists themselves. Moving through the galleries alongside participating artists\, visitors will gain deeper insight into the creative processes\, personal narratives and conceptual frameworks that shape the works on display. \n\n\n\nCurated by the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission\, THERE IS AN ISLAND III unfolds across three interconnected thematic pillars: \n\n\n\nWomen\, Everyday Life\, and Cyprus as a Bridge and Crossroads of the Mediterranean. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition presents Cyprus not simply as a geographical territory\, but as a lived and evolving experience — shaped by memory\, resilience\, displacement\, belonging and reinvention. Landscapes sit alongside fragments of the Cypriot lira; textiles converse with photography; abstraction meets narrative. Together\, the works form a layered dialogue between past and present\, homeland and diaspora\, tradition and contemporary expression. \n\n\n\nArtists shaped by diverse journeys and lived experiences work side by side within the same space\, creating a plurality of voices that reflects the complexity of Cypriot identity in the 21st century. The exhibition becomes not only a display of artworks\, but a shared environment — a living cultural space that continues to grow through encounter and conversation. \n\n\n\nThe Artist-Led Curated Tour invites visitors to move beyond observation and into dialogue. It is an opportunity to ask questions\, explore materials and symbolism\, and engage directly with the artists whose works form this evolving exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n🎟️ Complimentary tickets can be reserved here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/there-is-an-island-iii-artist-led-tour-tickets-1984388405138? \n\n\nAdvance booking is recommended. \n\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to the Cyprus House.

SUMMARY:UK Cyprus Film Festival 2026 – London Edition (Part I)
DESCRIPTION:In Memory of Director Irena Joannides \n\n\nThis spring\, the UK Cyprus Film Festival 2026 launches the London edition of its programme at Cyprus House (13 St. \n\n\n\nSunday 8 March 2026 \n\n\nJourneys\, Return\, and the Geography of Memory \n\n\n14:30 – Roads and Oranges (100’) Directed by Aliki Danezi Knutsen \n\n\nRooted in landscape and lived experience\, Roads and Oranges traces emotional and physical journeys across Cyprus\, where place becomes inseparable from memory. Drawing on everyday encounters and intimate observation\, the film reflects on movement\, belonging and the subtle ties that connect people to land\, history and one another. \n\n\nFollowed by a Q&A with Director Aliki Danezi Knutsen \n\n\n17:00 – The Last Homecoming (82’) Directed by Corina Avraamidou \n\n\nA powerful meditation on return\, The Last Homecoming explores what it means to go back — not only to a place\, but to a past shaped by absence\, loss and unresolved memory. Through a deeply personal lens\, the film confronts the emotional weight of homecoming and the quiet transformations it brings. \n\n\nFollowed by a Q&A with Director Corina Avraamidou. \n\n\nBooking Information \n\n\n🎟 Tickets are available per day (8 March & 26 April). \n\n\nPlease note that capacity is limited. We kindly ask you to reserve tickets only if you are confident you can attend\, ensuring access for as many audience members as possible.
