SUMMARY:Photography and Visual Storytelling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:With Alexis Andreou \n\nAs part of the exhibition THERE IS AN ISLAND and within the wider framework of the UK Cyprus Film Festival\, we are delighted to present a special workshop led by London-based documentary photographer Alexis Andreou. \n\n\nTaking place at 1:00pm\, just ahead of the festival screenings at 4:00pm\, this immersive session creates a meaningful bridge between still and moving image — exploring how narrative is constructed\, sequenced\, and experienced across visual forms. \n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\nThis workshop explores the intersection of documentary photography\, narrative construction\, text\, and the photo book format. Through presentation and discussion\, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how photographic sequences and written language interact to create compelling visual stories. \n\n\nAndreou’s practice focuses on the post-conflict landscape of Cyprus and the impact of displacement on communities shaped by memory and division. Text plays a central role in his work\, often drawing from testimonies and lived experience. His projects frequently culminate in carefully constructed photo books — tangible narrative objects that foster intimacy between image and viewer. \n\n\nThe session will examine: \n\n\n\n\nThe fundamentals of documentary photography and its narrative power \n\n\nKey principles in designing and sequencing photo books \n\n\nTechniques for editing photographs for book form and visual spreads \n\n\nThe dynamic interplay between text and image\, and how meaning shifts when language enters the frame \n\n\n\n\nThe workshop will begin with a presentation before moving into a hands-on group exercise. Participants will work with provided sketchbooks and text excerpts to construct their own visual storytelling sequences. Those who wish are invited to bring their own prints or work-in-progress\, though this is not mandatory. \n\n\nWho Is It For? \n\n\nThis workshop is open to anyone interested in documentary photography and visual storytelling — photographers\, filmmakers\, visual artists\, students\, or those simply curious about how images shape cultural memory. \n\n\nSituated within THERE IS AN ISLAND\, a season reflecting on Cyprus through art\, memory\, and place\, and unfolding just hours before the UK Cyprus Film Festival screenings\, this workshop invites participants to reflect on how stories of landscape\, displacement\, identity\, and testimony are framed — whether through still image or cinema. \n\n\n🎟 Tickets are available via Eventbrite. \n\n\nPlaces are limited and early booking is recommended.

SUMMARY:UK Cyprus Film Festival 2026 – London Edition (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:In Memory of Director Irena Joannides \n\n\nThis spring\, the UK Cyprus Film Festival 2026 launches the London edition of its programme at Cyprus House (13 St. James’s Square\, SW1Y 4LB)\, as part of the official cultural celebrations of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. \n\n\nThis first chapter of the festival brings together award-winning films by Cypriot women filmmakers whose work speaks with clarity\, sensitivity and courage about memory\, displacement\, identity\, inner life and social constraint. The programme is dedicated to the memory of director Irena Joannides\, whose cinematic voice — poetic\, restrained and deeply humane — continues to resonate within Cypriot cinema and beyond. \n\n\nAcross two carefully curated days\, audiences are invited not only to watch these films\, but to enter into conversation with their creators\, through post-screening Q&As that open space for dialogue\, reflection and shared experience. \n\n\n🎟 Day tickets are available for each date. As seating is limited\, we kindly ask audiences to book only if they are certain they can attend\, allowing as many people as possible to take part. \n\nSunday 26 April 2026 \n\n\nWomen’s Lives\, Unspoken Histories\, Inner Revolutions \n\n\n16:00 – Eleni’s Olives (19’) Directed by Yianna Americanou \n\n\nShot with lyrical simplicity\, Eleni’s Olives is a tender portrait of everyday resilience. Through small gestures and domestic rhythms\, the film reflects on generational memory\, labour and the intimate bonds that sustain life across time. Its quiet observational style allows the personal to become universal. \n\n\n& \n\n\n16:20 – Her Violet Garden (18’) Directed by Irena Joannides \n\n\nA poetic short that distils Joannides’ distinctive cinematic voice\, Her Violet Garden unfolds as an inner landscape — a meditation on fragility\, solitude and emotional endurance. The film’s restrained imagery and delicate pacing speak to the director’s lasting contribution to Cypriot cinema and her ability to express complex inner states with rare subtlety. \n\n\n16:45 – Unwitnessed Memories (60’) Directed by Athena Xenidou \n\n\nBuilt from first-hand testimonies\, Unwitnessed Memories gives voice to those who grew up in the long shadow of 1974. SUMMARY:THERE IS AN ISLAND III: Side Event
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Home & Viper in my grave \n\n\nMaria Christodoulou & Antonis Sideras \n\nAs part of THERE IS AN ISLAND III\, Cyprus House presents a special evening bringing together two distinct yet deeply resonant artistic practices that explore memory\, identity\, and the intimate geographies of belonging. \n\n\nOpening at 6:00pm\, this parallel presentation invites audiences to move between two spaces — between the domestic and the embodied\, between collective memory and personal testimony. \n\n\nTickets are available via Eventbrite. Places are limited and early booking is recommended. \n\n\nMaria Christodoulou \n\n\nVoices of Home: women and everyday life in Cypriot culture \n\n\nIn this immersive audio installation\, Maria Christodoulou recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Cypriot household in the UK\, transforming the gallery into a living archive of multigenerational memory. Through recordings of women and girls in their homes\, visitors are enveloped in an intimate soundscape that foregrounds everyday rituals:  gestures of cooking\, speaking\, remembering\, preserving. \n\n\nAt its heart\, Voices of Home reflects on how traditions travel\, how they are carried and reimagined in the diaspora\, and how women sustain cultural continuity within domestic space. By centering female voices and lived experience\, the work reclaims the home as a powerful site of transmission:  a space where identity is shaped\, heritage safeguarded\, and histories quietly endure. \n\n\nAntonis Sideras \n\n\nViper in my grave \n\n\nBeginning at approximately 6:30pm\, Antonis Sideras presents Viper in my grave\, a performance-lecture and book-handling event marking the first public presentation of their eponymous art book. \n\n\nThe work unfolds as a six-metre-long scroll of handwritten poetry and drawings\, tracing the artist’s lived experience of growing up queer in Cyprus alongside the inherited trauma of being a first-generation refugee (1974). The viper becomes a visceral metaphor for trauma lodged within the body: coiled\, persistent\, and transformative. \n\n\nThrough poetry\, visual art\, and embodied narration\, Sideras invites the audience into an intimate process of confrontation and liberation\, where Cypriot cultural memory becomes both wound and remedy. \n\n\nTogether\, these two projects form a dialogue between home and body\, between women’s collective memory and queer personal testimony\, between inherited history and contemporary self-making. The evening will conclude with short opening remarks and a drinks reception\, offering space for reflection\, conversation\, and connection. \n\n\nThis side event expands the curatorial landscape of THERE IS AN ISLAND III\, foregrounding voices that speak from within the domestic sphere and from within the body — reminding us that islands are not only geographic\, but lived\, remembered\, and carried.

SUMMARY:Cyprus as a Crossroads of Art: From Antiquity to the Medieval Period

DESCRIPTION:Reserve your spot via link \n\n\n\nCyprus has long stood at the intersection of cultures\, empires\, and artistic traditions. Positioned between East and West\, the island has continuously absorbed\, transformed\, and reinterpreted external influences\, forging a distinctive artistic language that spans millennia. This evening event explores Cyprus’ role as a cultural and artistic crossroads\, from the Archaic period to the medieval era\, through two complementary research presentations. \n\n\n\nThe event will feature two half-hour talks by Alexis Kyriacou and Dr Mark Merrony\, followed by audience discussion and a wine and snack reception. Both presentations are connected through their focus on Cyprus as a historical bridge between worlds and are forthcoming publications in ANTIQVVS magazine. \n\n\n\nThe first presentation\, Sculpture and Identity in Archaic Cyprus (740–475 BC)\, will be delivered by Alexis Kyriacou\, archaeologist\, art dealer\, and PhD student at the University of Reading. Drawing on limestone votive sculpture from sites such as Kition\, Amathus\, Tamassos\, and Marion\, Kyriacou examines how Cypriot sculptors expressed identity through hybrid artistic forms. By blending Greek\, Phoenician\, Egyptian\, and local traditions\, these works reveal an island culture that was neither peripheral nor passive\, but actively engaged in shaping a shared Mediterranean visual language. \n\n\n\nThe second presentation shifts to the medieval period\, focusing on the mosaics of Kykkos Monastery. Dr Mark Merrony\, Editor in Chief of ANTIQVVS magazine and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, will explore the iconography\, techniques\, and historical context of these remarkable works. His talk highlights how Cypriot art continued its dialogue between East and West into the Byzantine and later periods\, maintaining a distinct voice while absorbing wider artistic currents. \n\n\n\nBy placing Archaic sculpture and medieval mosaics side by side\, the event foregrounds both continuity and transformation in Cypriot art. SUMMARY:George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus
DESCRIPTION:Following its recent postponement\, the exhibition “George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus” returns to London as part of the official cultural programme marking Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (2026). \n\n\n\nPresented by the A. G. Leventis Gallery\, in collaboration with the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom\, and with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus\, the exhibition is hosted at the The Hellenic Centre. \n\n\n\nThis marks the first international presentation of the exhibition following its inaugural showing at the A. G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia in 2022. \n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition \n\n\n\nThrough his work\, George Polyviou Georghiou (1901–1972) emerges as one of the most significant figures in the visual narration of Cyprus’s modern history. \n\n\n\nHis paintings\, created primarily during the 1940s and 1950s\, form a powerful and deeply personal portrait of the island. Through scenes of everyday life\, religious imagery\, symbolic compositions and landscapes\, Georghiou captures the essence of Cyprus—its people\, its traditions\, its anxieties and its enduring spirit. \n\n\n\nA particularly important aspect of the exhibition is the presentation of works that remained for over forty years in the artist’s hometown of Famagusta. Their return and display today represent a meaningful moment in the ongoing effort to preserve and share Cyprus’s cultural heritage. \n\n\n\nGeorghiou’s work exists at the intersection of Cypriot experience and European artistic tradition\, drawing on influences that range from religious iconography to modern European painting. His compositions bring together figures\, spaces and symbols into a rich visual language through which memory\, identity and history are explored. \n\n\n\nCurators & Contributors \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is curated by: \n\n\n\nLoukia Loizou Hadjigavriel (Director\, Anastasios G. It is a reflection on how art carries memory across time and place. \n\n\n\nThrough the work of George Pol. Georghiou\, Cyprus is revealed not only as a geographical space\, but as a lived experience—one shaped by history\, displacement\, resilience and continuity. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition brings that story to London\, inviting audiences to encounter Cyprus through the eyes of an artist who dedicated his life to capturing its essence.

SUMMARY:Dr Yiannis Toumazis Lecture & Talk
DESCRIPTION:Reserve your spot via link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dr-yiannis-toumazis-lecture-talk-tickets-1986330187060? \n\n\n\n\nA glimpse into Famagusta’s cultural: A treasure trove of Greek Cypriot art returned by the Turkish Cypriot to the Greek Cypriot community \n\n\n\nGeorghiou – Timeless Cyprus\, presented in London on the occasion of Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (January–June 2026). \n\n\n\nDelivered by Dr Yiannis Toumazis\, the talk offers a rare and deeply personal insight into the return of important Greek Cypriot artworks that remained inaccessible for decades in Famagusta. Drawing on his pivotal role in the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage\, Dr Toumazis reflects on the negotiations\, field visits\, documentation processes\, and human encounters that enabled these works to be recovered and shared once more with the public. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the lecture lies the work of George Pol. Georghiou\, a central figure of Cypriot modern art whose paintings became a visual chronicle of the island’s modern history. Rooted in the landscapes\, people\, and traditions of Cyprus\, his imagery captures both monumental and intimate momentsm faith and daily life\, displacement and continuity\, memory and resilience. Through this lens\, the lecture invites audiences to consider how art can function as testimony and how cultural heritage can preserve identity across time and rupture. \n\n\n\nExpanding the themes of the exhibition\, the talk explores the broader concept of cultural return and restitution\, addressing why the protection and recovery of cultural heritage remains a shared European responsibility. Within the context of Cyprus’s EU Presidency\, the event highlights culture as a powerful space for dialogue\, cooperation\, and reconciliation. \n\n\n\nVisitors are warmly encouraged to arrive early to view the exhibition before the lecture begins. \n\n\nAbout the Exhibition \n\n\n\nGeorge Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus is presented by the A. G. Leventis Foundationthrough the A. G. Leventis Gallery\, with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus High Commission in the UK. The exhibition is curated by Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel and Katerina Stephanides\, following the vision of the late Eleni S. Nikita\, and brings together works from state\, private\, and family collections\, including a significant number of works returned from the occupied areas of Cyprus.

SUMMARY:Rivers: A site-responsive poetic performance
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in London invites you to the closing event of its Cultural Season 2026 (first half) — an immersive\, site-responsive performance unfolding within the intimate landscape of St James’s Square Garden. \n\n\n\nConceived by writer Costas Mannouris\, director Petros Charalambous\, and visual creator Eugene Gabriel\, Rivers transforms the park into a living poetic environment. Through a careful interplay of text\, image\, performance\, and spatial experience\, the work invites audiences to move through the space and encounter fragments of memory as they surface\, dissolve\, and reappear. \n\n\n\nInstalled across the garden\, poems emerge as quiet markers within the landscape\, guiding visitors through a reflective journey shaped by presence and absence. The performance unfolds gradually\, without a fixed point of view\, encouraging a personal and contemplative engagement with the work. \n\n\n\nAt its core\, Rivers reflects on the transient nature of memory — on words once spoken\, emotions once felt\, and moments that pass through us\, often leaving only traces behind. Like rivers that flow irreversibly towards the open sea\, these fragments resist containment\, yet continue to shape our inner landscapes. \n\n\n\nAn experience that invites us to pause\,to listen\,and to remember. \n\nPractical Information \n\n\n\n\nLocation: St James’s Square Garden\, London \n\n\nAccess: Entry via the northwestern gate\, closest to the Cyprus High Commission \n\n\nTime: Doors open at 6:00pm | Event concludes at 8:00pm \n\n\nAdmission: By complimentary ticket via link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rivers-a-site-responsive-poetic-performance-tickets-1986418535312? \n\n\n\n\n\nIn case of adverse weather conditions\, the event will be transferred indoors to Cyprus House.
