SUMMARY:Online Concert in Solidarity with the Seafarers and Their Families Around the World
DESCRIPTION:The concert will be on YouTube from 7 – 11 May 2021 and will include arias from Bellini’s opera Norma\, Puccini’s La Bohème & Madama Butterfly; well-known songs by Gershwin\, Donizetti & Hadjidakis\, traditional songs of Cyprus and Israel; as well as film music from Once Upon a Time in the West & Boy on a Dolphin. \nAccess to global markets is key for shipping\, as 90% of world trade is conducted by ships.  The shipping sector reinstated its critical role when during the pandemic\, ships continued to move cargo for the benefit of societies and the global economy. This was made possible because of the sacrifices of crews who were faced with unprecedented challenges during the pandemic.  Their endurance\, expediency and dedication to their task continued relentlessly despite the psychological and physical fatigue and the inevitable safety concerns. \nAs at December 2020\, more than 400\,000 seafarers are stranded on ships beyond the expiry of their contracts and are unable to be repatriated to their homes and families due to covid travel restrictions.   An equal number of seafarers globally are stuck at home and unable to provide for their families. Travel restrictions have meant that the seafarers cannot leave ships\, be repatriated home or get urgent medical attention as required.  Others have seen their contracts terminated or have been quarantined on vessels for over 14 days without pay. \nThe TSAVLIRIS CULTURAL FOUNDATION\, through this inspiring concert\, wishes to put the spotlight on seafarers globally\, to raise awareness about how the collaboration and assistance of all stakeholders is required in order to alleviate the burden on crews around the world\, and to say thank you for their support and unwavering endurance to maintain the supply chain running for the benefit of the rest of the world. We need to prioritize their repatriation and covid19 vaccinations. As Mr. Efthymios Mitropoulos\, former Secretary General of the IMO has so eloquently put it\, “Without shipping and its people\, nothing would move: half the world wuld freeze\, and the other half would starve”. \nThe Tsavliris Salvage Group\, has joined the 750 companies and organizations who have signed up to the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change. \nBECAUSE WE CARE! \nOrganised by Tsavliris Cultural Foundation\, supported by the Hellenic Centre

SUMMARY:Our souls longing for songs
DESCRIPTION:26/2 Our souls longing for songs \nFri 19:00 (75’) \nIn a peculiar era where everything is re-organised and disorganised\, constantly readjusting and changing\, our only lifeline\, our hope and light\, is found in the songs lasting through the years\, those resisting time\, those never forgotten. At every concert\, our lips still whisper the lyrics\, despite the decades that have elapsed. They remind us of our very own childhood and teenage memories\, of feasts and celebrations\, of days with friends and old love stories. \nVakia Stavrou performs a repertoire of beloved songs from every corner of the globe\, in her own magical\, simple and natural way. Let the dance begin\, let the miracle unfold! \nAccompanied by pianist Manolis Neofytou.

SUMMARY:Cyprus in the Long Late Antiquity
DESCRIPTION:Keynote Lecture by Marcus Rautman (University of Missouri) on ‘Archaeology and the making of a Cypriot Late Antiquity’ on Jan 13th\, at 5pm.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThis symposium brings together archaeologists and historians engaged in the study of Cyprus between the sixth and eighth centuries. They will collate the results of recent and past research to arrive at a comprehensive\, interdisciplinary reconstruction of life on the island in the Long Late Antiquity. \nThe symposium is co-organised by Dr Ine Jacobs(Stavros Niarchos Foundation Associate Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Visual Culture) and Dr Panayiotis Panayides (British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow). \nAll events are hosted virtually via Zoom by theIoannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies\, University of Oxford. \nLate Antiquity in Cyprus was a period of growing affluence and prosperity. In the traditional historical view\, the period ended abruptly as a result of the Arab raids of the mid-seventh century. The original focus of urban archaeology on monumental structures and Christian basilicas tended to stress the impact of these raids further\, often overshadowing archaeological evidence that hinted at continuities beyond the mid-seventh century. \nRecent archaeological research on late antique Cyprus has shifted its focus away from urban centres and single monuments in favour of a more contextual perspective. Building on well-established traditions of field prospection\, diachronic survey projects and small-scale excavations are revealing a complex web of settlement patterns. These have shown that economic\, political\, and cultural contacts between the island and the wider eastern Mediterranean were continued. Moreover\, they also suggest that the end or transformation of occupation on individual sites cannot always be explained by catastrophic events\, but should be interpreted in terms of local adaptation to changing needs and contacts. \nWe are also pleased to host a public keynote on Wednesday 13 January at 5pm: Marcus Rautman(Professor of Art and Archaeology of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages at the University of Missouri-Columbia\, USA) will be presenting on Archaeology and the making of a Cypriot Late Antiquity. The event is held under the auspices of His Excellency the High Commissioner of Cyprus in the UK\, Mr Andreas S. Kakouris. \nZoom links for the events will be made available following registration. \nThe booklet of abstracts can be found here. \nFor inquiries\, please contact Dr Panayiotis Panayides (panayiotis.panayides@classics.ox.ac.uk).
