SUMMARY:The Pittas Collection
DESCRIPTION:Volume 2: Early Italian and Renaissance Works.\nVolume 3: The Mythological Paintings and Sculptures. \nThe collection of western European painting and sculpture assembled over the past thirty years by Dr Andreas Pittas is one of the finest ever formed by a Greek Cypriot collector. \nTo date the collection has been published in three handsomely illustrated and scholarly catalogues\, all by Mandragora of Florence. The first\, Early Italian Paintings 1200-1530\, by Dr Stefano G. Casu\, appeared in 2011. The second\, Early Italian and Renaissance Works\, again by Stefano Casu\, with Gabriele Fattorini and Linda Pisani\, appeared in 2018. Both of these reflect Dr Pittas’s fascination with the relationship between the Byzantine tradition and Italian art at the dawn of the Renaissance. \nThe third\, Mythological Paintings and Sculptures\, edited by Dr Anthi Andronikou and Professor Peter Humfrey\, appeared in the autumn of 2019. This volume reflects another of Dr Pittas’s passions: this time for Graeco-Roman mythology. No less the natural product of his own roots in the culture of the eastern Mediterranean\, his interest in this vast topic is\, by contrast\, not limited to any particular period or school\, but extends from the art of classical antiquity to the present day. \nThe event is held to celebrate the recent publication of the second and third volumes of the catalogue of the Pittas collection. The respective editors will present brief talks illustrating the highlights of the collection\, and drawing attention to their various points of contact in terms of theme and taste. The guests will include the creator of the collection\, Dr Pittas\, as well as several of the other distinguished scholars who have contributed to Volume 3. \nDr Stefano G. Casu is an art historian specialising in Italian Gothic and early Renaissance painting. He currently teaches at the University of California and the University of Minnesota in Florence. \nDr Anthi Andronikou specialises in the artistic and cultural relationships between fourteenth and fifteenth-century Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. She is currently British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of St Andrews\, \nEmeritus Professor Peter Humfrey specialises in the paintings of Renaissance Venice. SUMMARY:Towards a Sociology of the Nursing Woman in Late Antiquity and Early Byzantium
DESCRIPTION:This lecture presentation concerns an early chapter of the fascinating social history of breastfeeding. It examines the social realities and ideologies surrounding the nursing woman (mother and wet nurse) from the first centuries of our common era until seventh-century Byzantium. Ancient sources and earlier research are revisited in an attempt to unravel the economic\, social\, political\, cultural\, moral and emotional implications that determined the ways in which nursing mothers and wet nurses were perceived and treated in the examined period. \nThis research has been undertaken in the framework of a three-year project (2018-2021) entitled “Lactating Breasts: Motherhood and Breastfeeding in Antiquity and Byzantium (4th c. BCE-7th c. CE)” (MotherBreast)\, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation. \nOrganised by the University of Cyprus (MotherBreast Project) and The Hellenic Centre.

SUMMARY:I\, Cactus AND
DESCRIPTION:I\, Cactus AND \nby A.Mina and H.Michael \nPV: Thursday\, 13th February 2020\, 6-9pm\nFILET\, 103 Murray Grove\,\nLondon\, N1 7QP \nDuration of exhibition:\n14-16th Feb 2020\nFri- Sun 12:00-17:00 \nIn I\, Cactus AND\, artists A. Mina and H. Michael present their new body of work in response to what they consider to be systemic bias against the feminine within societal structures.  Comprising sculpture\, print and sound\, the work will function as a performance installation\, relying on the activation of the imaginative space within each viewer to generate meaning. \nBy enabling different readings\, a new space opens up where the politics of power can be re-imagined in a less binary setting. \nCreated under the banner of www.amillionlovesongs.com a performance platform founded by the artists in 2014 by which they continue their search for meaning within the contemporary void using collaboration as a device.

SUMMARY:Reverie
DESCRIPTION:Visual Dance Theatre Performance by Georgia Tegou and Michalis Theophanous | dance-as-design.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\n‘Reverie’ is a journey into the subconscious. A deep dive into a world surrounded by archetypal images and symbols\, revealing stories of darkness\, irony\, fantasy and humour. Through a narrative that follows the structure of a dream\, where temporal flow is constantly interrupted\, ‘Reverie’ aims to question our certainties and threaten our established logic. \nChoreographers Georgia Tegou and Michalis Theophanous create powerful dance performances that inhabit highly visual environments. Influenced by architecture\, sculpture and the visual arts\, they use the movement of bodies to portray narratives of the human condition. The end result is a blend of contemporary dance\, visual physical theatre and performance art. \nTickets also available on 020 7487 5060 \nOrganised by the company dance-as-design. and the Hellenic Centre \nSupported by Arts Council England\, Studio Wayne McGregor\, SystemsLab and University of Roehampton.
