SUMMARY:The Weird Wave of Greek Cinema: a Movement or a Moment?
DESCRIPTION:The Weird Wave of Greek Cinema: \na Movement or a Moment? \nPublic Lecture by Dr Marios Psaras \nThursday 16 September\, 7PM \nThe Hellenic Centre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr Psaras revisits landmark films that constitute the main corpus of the so-called “Greek Weird Wave”\, such as Yorgos Lanthimos’s Dogtooth (2009) and Alps (2011)\, Panos Koutras’s Strella (2009) and Athina-Rachel Tsangaris’s Attenberg (2010)\, reflecting on a reading of the “weird” as “queer” and identifying the thematic and formal disenchantment with traditional heteropatriarchal values and the representation that guided the national imaginary and experience. He then turns to later works\, such as Tonia Mishialis’ Pause (2018)\, to evaluate the after-effects of the original wave.\nOrganised by The Anglo-Hellenic League. Places for this event will be reserved on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nTo reserve your place(s)\, contact info@anglohellenicleague.org by 14 September.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Marios Psaras holds a Degree in Education & Philosophy (University of Cyprus)\, an MA and a PhD in Film Studies (Queen Mary University of London). He is the author of the first book-length study on contemporary Greek cinema\, The Queer Greek Weird Wave: Ethics\, Politics and the Crisis of Meaning (London: Palgrave Macmillan\, 2016). Dr Psaras has taught film theory at UK universities and published articles\, reviews and book chapters on contemporary Greek\, European and global queer cinema. He is a member of the Hellenic Film Academy\, artistic director of the annual festival Cyprus Short Film Day\, London\, a member of the pre-selection committee of the National Section of the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus and a member of the editorial board of Filmicon: Journal of Greek Film Studies. Since September 2018\, he has been the Cultural Counsellor at the Cyprus High Commission in London.

SUMMARY:Picketing for Varosi outside 10 Downing Street
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to take part in the protest against the continuing crime of Turkey against the Greek Cypriots that took place in 1974. To condemn the provocative actions and plans by Turkey for the settlement in Famagusta by settlers from Turkey. \n \nThe peaceful protest in the form of picketing\, will be addressed to the Prime Minister. It would emphasise that Britain\, as a guarantor power of Cyprus’ independence and sovereignty\, had and still has a responsibility to stop it and act in a positive way to end the invasion and occupation of a very large part of Cyprus. \n \nThe slogans will be on Famagusta’s return to its lawful inhabitants\, and Turkey and Erdogan to stop treating the City as theirs. We would also high light the obligations of Britain on Cyprus. \n \nThe protest and the holding of a picket will be held on the 17th August at 18:45 to 20:15 and it will take place outside 10 Downing Street. \n \nIf you would like to support us by taking part we would be delighted. It would also give us more strength to continue our struggle to achieve the Return. \n \nWe would appreciate it if you could let us know in good time so that we can make the necessary arrangements with the Metropolitan Police and the Council. \nPlease RSVP by email to info@famagusta.org.uk by Friday 13/08/2021.

SUMMARY:Online Concert in Solidarity with the Seafarers and Their Families Around the World
DESCRIPTION:The concert will be on YouTube from 7 – 11 May 2021 and will include arias from Bellini’s opera Norma\, Puccini’s La Bohème & Madama Butterfly; well-known songs by Gershwin\, Donizetti & Hadjidakis\, traditional songs of Cyprus and Israel; as well as film music from Once Upon a Time in the West & Boy on a Dolphin. \nAccess to global markets is key for shipping\, as 90% of world trade is conducted by ships. The shipping sector reinstated its critical role when during the pandemic\, ships continued to move cargo for the benefit of societies and the global economy. This was made possible because of the sacrifices of crews who were faced with unprecedented challenges during the pandemic. Their endurance\, expediency and dedication to their task continued relentlessly despite the psychological and physical fatigue and the inevitable safety concerns. \nAs at December 2020\, more than 400\,000 seafarers are stranded on ships beyond the expiry of their contracts and are unable to be repatriated to their homes and families due to covid travel restrictions. An equal number of seafarers globally are stuck at home and unable to provide for their families. Travel restrictions have meant that the seafarers cannot leave ships\, be repatriated home or get urgent medical attention as required. Others have seen their contracts terminated or have been quarantined on vessels for over 14 days without pay. \nThe TSAVLIRIS CULTURAL FOUNDATION\, through this inspiring concert\, wishes to put the spotlight on seafarers globally\, to raise awareness about how the collaboration and assistance of all stakeholders is required in order to alleviate the burden on crews around the world\, and to say thank you for their support and unwavering endurance to maintain the supply chain running for the benefit of the rest of the world. We need to prioritize their repatriation and covid19 vaccinations. As Mr. Efthymios Mitropoulos\, former Secretary General of the IMO has so eloquently put it\, “Without shipping and its people\, nothing would move: half the world wuld freeze\, and the other half would starve”. \nThe Tsavliris Salvage Group\, has joined the 750 companies and organizations who have signed up to the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change. \nBECAUSE WE CARE! \nOrganised by Tsavliris Cultural Foundation\, supported by the Hellenic Centre

SUMMARY:Our souls longing for songs
DESCRIPTION:26/2 Our souls longing for songs \nFri 19:00 (75’) \nIn a peculiar era where everything is re-organised and disorganised\, constantly readjusting and changing\, our only lifeline\, our hope and light\, is found in the songs lasting through the years\, those resisting time\, those never forgotten. At every concert\, our lips still whisper the lyrics\, despite the decades that have elapsed. They remind us of our very own childhood and teenage memories\, of feasts and celebrations\, of days with friends and old love stories. \nVakia Stavrou performs a repertoire of beloved songs from every corner of the globe\, in her own magical\, simple and natural way. Let the dance begin\, let the miracle unfold! \nAccompanied by pianist Manolis Neofytou.

Everything works\njust fine\, until things stop working just fine. Lambros is trapped. What has occurred? What\nis true and what is false? What is freedom\, and what does its absence signify? The journey of his life from\ndarkness to light is the journey of our own life. \nPlay | Visual idea | Director: Myrto Papachristoforou\nArtistic direction: Katerina Attalidou\nStage set: Katerina Attalidou\, Stefanos Karababas\, Stylianos Pelekanos & Omass Architects\,\nPavlides Carpenters Ltd\, Waternet Ltd\, Myrto Papachristoforou\nActing: Irena Christodoulou\, Christo Avraam\, Myrto Papachristoforou \nThe poster has been created by the visual artist Katerina Attalidou
