SUMMARY:An unintentional colonial gift: Herbert Horatio Kitchener and the antiquity of the toponymic history of Cyprus
DESCRIPTION:In 1878\, a young lieutenant of the Royal Engineers\, H.H. Kitchener\, arrived in Cyprus. He had been sent to the newly acquired British possession in order to do a quick and rough survey for revenue needs; or at least this is what Sir Garnet Wolseley\, the first High Commissioner\, had in mind. Instead\, working against all odds and certainly against the High Commissioner’s wishes\, Kitchener produced an unsurpassed and quite unexpected geospatial and cultural record of the island’s identity. \nHis Excellency Andreas S. Kakouris\, High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus\, and Dr Ioanna Hadjicosti\, Director of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation\, will introduce a lecture by Professor Maria Iacovou\, of the University of Cyprus\, on ‘Herbert Horatio Kitchener and Cyprus: The antiquity of the toponymic history of Cyprus’. \nThe maps produced by Kitchener will be displayed alongside related documents held by The National Archives. \nThe lecture will be followed by a wine reception showcasing Cypriot products. \nSpeaker biography \nMaria Iacovou is Professor of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology in the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus (since 2008). She received her PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 1984 and in 1986 she was postdoctoral fellow in the Institute of Classical Studies\, University College London. Before her election to the University of Cyprus (in 1998)\, she served for ten years as the Director of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation (1987-1997)\, where she was in charge of the development of the Cypriot Collections and especially the Cyprus Map Collection.

SUMMARY:In the Light of Music
DESCRIPTION:Programme \nW. A. Mozart: Sonata in C major\, KV 330 \nM. Ravel: Sonatine \nFr. Chopin: Nocturne\, Op. 37/1\, Waltz\, Op. 42\, Polonaise\, Op. 53 \nC. Stylianou: Twelve Preludes\, Series I (2008-12)\, nos. 2\, 4\, 6\, 9\, 12 \nThe High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom invites you to a piano recital by \nNicolas Costantinou. The artist will be performing masterpieces by some of the leading composers of the \npast\, as well as of contemporary Cypriot composer\, Constantinos Stylianou. The performance begins with \nthe charming Sonata in C major by the Austrian composer\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Next is the bright and \ntransparent Sonata by the French composer\, Maurice Ravel\, a neoclassical work full of beautiful melodies \nand contrasts in sound-colours and moods. Following will be three works by the Polish composer\, Fryderyk \nChopin. The Nocturne in G minor has a lamenting and heartfelt tone throughout\, with a prayer-like middle \nsection. The Waltz in A flat major has the character of a poetic dance and consists of five exciting themes \nthat are dramatically structured into a coherent and fascinating whole. The ever-so popular Polonaise\, op. \n53\, known as “Heroic”\, is daring\, firm and grandiose. The performance ends with the presentation of five of \nthe Twelve Preludes by Constantinos Stylianou\, which are inspired by various works of art by painters\, such \nas\, Piet Mondrian\, J. M. W. Turner\, C. D. Friedrich\, Gustav Klimt and Paula Rego. \nFREE ENTRY \nBooking essential\, please visit https://lightofmusic.eventbrite.co.uk
