SUMMARY:SEFERIS - CYPRUS - ASIA MINOR
DESCRIPTION:SEFERIS – CYPRUS – ASIA MINOR: “MEMORY HURTS WHEREVER YOU TOUCH IT” \nGiorgos Seferis\, one of the most important Greek poets and a Nobel laureate\, had a deep connection with Cyprus. During the three trips he made to Cyprus\, in 1953\, 1954 and 1955\, he wrote some of his greatest poems\, all of which were dedicated to the island of Cyprus. These poems express perfectly the island’s cultural wealth\, history and identity while conveying the ideas and values of Cyprus\, which remain timeless and relevant to the current time. In Seferis own words\, Cyprus is the place where\, miracles still happen. At the concert\, seven symphonic poems will be performed from the collection “Κύπρον ου μ’ εθέσπισεν” which was published in December 1955. The composer of the songs is Giorgos Kalogirou. \nOn the centenary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe\, Giorgos Seferis the poet from Smyrna\, becomes the connection between Cyprus and Anatolia. Cyprus and Anatolia\, are not only connected historically\, culturally and aesthetically\, but also through the emotions of their people\, in both regions “memory hurts wherever you touch it”. Along with songs from Seferi’s “Τραγούδια καταστρώματος” poetry collection\, one will enjoy the composers new songs entitled “Ο καημός της Ιωνίας” based on the lyrics of Eurydiki Perikleous-Papadopoulos in regards to Anatolia as well as poems of Cypriot poets such as Michalis Passiardis\, Vassilis Michaelidis\, Dimitris Lipertis set to music by the composer himself. \nThe narrator\, being both the poet and the bearer of speech\, is an integral part of the concert. \nWith the use of both traditional and modern instruments\, the songs with create a musical passage to connect past\, present and future. \nA poet’s words express every individuals need for truth\, consolation and struggle to stay alive and active in difficult eras. Now\, in the times we live\, these words have to be heard and become a guide to the conscientious challenges we face. \nThe live music performance consists of five musicians (lute\, guitar\, flute\, percussion\, santouri) and a narrator. \nGeorge Kalogirou: Voice – Guitar – Tzouras \nCharalambos Panteli: Lute – Lavta – Guitar \nConstantina Xenophontos: Voice – Percussions \nVeronica Aloneftou: Santoor \nConstantinos Makaritis: Flute \nChristos Pettemeridis: Narration

SUMMARY:A Family Christmas Concert with Asterakia and Rebetiko Carnival
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for an interactive family concert! Our star has fallen out of the sky and landed on earth. With a fun storyline and live musical instruments\, we will get ready for Christmas. Asterakia is collaborating with great musicians from the Rebetiko Carnival. \nAt the end of the children will have the opportunity to try the piano\, the violin\, the bass\, the cello\, the clarinet and the percussion instruments. \nEleni Georgiou \nEleni Georgiou studied music and singing in France and UK. For 10 years she worked as a Music Coordinator in schools in London. In addition to this she worked as a professional opera singer\, while performing in London and other European cities. After the birth of her children she created Asterakia. Asterakia is a fun\, music\, movement and drama class in Greek for the under ‘5s. Asterakia’s curriculum is based through the use of original songs as well as a new arrangement of traditional Greek nursery rhymes\, classical pieces and folk songs. Two years ago\, Asterakia and Rebetiko Carnival created a series of interactive concerts in order the children to explore the beauty of the Greek Language and music through a fun concert. \nTHE REBETIKO Carnival \nThe Rebetiko Carnival became an official Charity in April 2016. However\, the idea began with a festival in 2014. Although the core organisers of the festival was a small group of musicians\, this was the culmination of a thriving community of Rebetiko music in London over the last twenty years\, bringing together people from all different backgrounds and interests. The musicians involved have spent a lot of their lives playing for people less fortunate than themselves\, going to hospitals\, hospices\, special needs residences\, communal centres for the blind and prisons over the last 10 years using Greek music as a therapy for those who need it. From it’s beautiful melodies that can be both uplifting and consoling to the rhythms that are incredible for any kind of body movement\, they have been all over the country bringing this kind of relief to these communities.\nThey are also dedicated to education…and not only to Greeks! In today’s schools world music as well as Greek classical civilization is a part of young students’ education in English schools\, so the group endeavour to take their music to non Greek speaking children and introduce them to the many riches they can explore through Greek music. Here they teach principles that apply to all music about improvisation\, composition\, ensemble playing\, listening and performing. \nOrganised by the Hellenic Centre
