SUMMARY:THERE IS AN ISLAND III: Side Event
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Home & Viper in my grave \n\n\nMaria Christodoulou & Antonis Sideras \n\nAs part of THERE IS AN ISLAND III\, Cyprus House presents a special evening bringing together two distinct yet deeply resonant artistic practices that explore memory\, identity\, and the intimate geographies of belonging. \n\n\nOpening at 6:00pm\, this parallel presentation invites audiences to move between two spaces — between the domestic and the embodied\, between collective memory and personal testimony. \n\n\nTickets are available via Eventbrite. Places are limited and early booking is recommended. \n\n\nMaria Christodoulou \n\n\nVoices of Home: women and everyday life in Cypriot culture \n\n\nIn this immersive audio installation\, Maria Christodoulou recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Cypriot household in the UK\, transforming the gallery into a living archive of multigenerational memory. Through recordings of women and girls in their homes\, visitors are enveloped in an intimate soundscape that foregrounds everyday rituals:  gestures of cooking\, speaking\, remembering\, preserving. \n\n\nAt its heart\, Voices of Home reflects on how traditions travel\, how they are carried and reimagined in the diaspora\, and how women sustain cultural continuity within domestic space. By centering female voices and lived experience\, the work reclaims the home as a powerful site of transmission:  a space where identity is shaped\, heritage safeguarded\, and histories quietly endure. \n\n\nAntonis Sideras \n\n\nViper in my grave \n\n\nBeginning at approximately 6:30pm\, Antonis Sideras presents Viper in my grave\, a performance-lecture and book-handling event marking the first public presentation of their eponymous art book. \n\n\nThe work unfolds as a six-metre-long scroll of handwritten poetry and drawings\, tracing the artist’s lived experience of growing up queer in Cyprus alongside the inherited trauma of being a first-generation refugee (1974). The viper becomes a visceral metaphor for trauma lodged within the body: coiled\, persistent\, and transformative. \n\n\nThrough poetry\, visual art\, and embodied narration\, Sideras invites the audience into an intimate process of confrontation and liberation\, where Cypriot cultural memory becomes both wound and remedy. \n\n\nTogether\, these two projects form a dialogue between home and body\, between women’s collective memory and queer personal testimony\, between inherited history and contemporary self-making. The evening will conclude with short opening remarks and a drinks reception\, offering space for reflection\, conversation\, and connection. \n\n\nThis side event expands the curatorial landscape of THERE IS AN ISLAND III\, foregrounding voices that speak from within the domestic sphere and from within the body — reminding us that islands are not only geographic\, but lived\, remembered\, and carried.

SUMMARY:Cyprus as a Crossroads of Art: From Antiquity to the Medieval Period

DESCRIPTION:Reserve your spot via link \n\n\n\nCyprus has long stood at the intersection of cultures\, empires\, and artistic traditions. Positioned between East and West\, the island has continuously absorbed\, transformed\, and reinterpreted external influences\, forging a distinctive artistic language that spans millennia. This evening event explores Cyprus’ role as a cultural and artistic crossroads\, from the Archaic period to the medieval era\, through two complementary research presentations. \n\n\n\nThe event will feature two half-hour talks by Alexis Kyriacou and Dr Mark Merrony\, followed by audience discussion and a wine and snack reception. Both presentations are connected through their focus on Cyprus as a historical bridge between worlds and are forthcoming publications in ANTIQVVS magazine. \n\n\n\nThe first presentation\, Sculpture and Identity in Archaic Cyprus (740–475 BC)\, will be delivered by Alexis Kyriacou\, archaeologist\, art dealer\, and PhD student at the University of Reading. Drawing on limestone votive sculpture from sites such as Kition\, Amathus\, Tamassos\, and Marion\, Kyriacou examines how Cypriot sculptors expressed identity through hybrid artistic forms. By blending Greek\, Phoenician\, Egyptian\, and local traditions\, these works reveal an island culture that was neither peripheral nor passive\, but actively engaged in shaping a shared Mediterranean visual language. \n\n\n\nThe second presentation shifts to the medieval period\, focusing on the mosaics of Kykkos Monastery. Dr Mark Merrony\, Editor in Chief of ANTIQVVS magazine and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, will explore the iconography\, techniques\, and historical context of these remarkable works. His talk highlights how Cypriot art continued its dialogue between East and West into the Byzantine and later periods\, maintaining a distinct voice while absorbing wider artistic currents. \n\n\n\nBy placing Archaic sculpture and medieval mosaics side by side\, the event foregrounds both continuity and transformation in Cypriot art. Hosted at Cyprus House\, London\, the evening invites academics\, students\, and members of the wider public to reflect on Cyprus’ enduring role as a meeting point of cultures—historically\, artistically\, and geopolitically.
