The Famagusta Association of Great Britain was founded in the 1980s to bring together the displaced people of Famagusta and its district village and remember the great city. A key part of the organisation’s work is to act as a pressure group to call for the immediate return of Famagusta to its lawful citizens under conditions of peace and security; as well as to call for the ending of the illegal Turkish military occupation of Cyprus.
One of the organisation’s most important initiatives was the collection of over 50,000 signatures demanding the return of the whole city of Famagusta to its lawful citizens. This petition, along with various United Nations Security Council Resolutions and a House of Commons motion (November 2015), that calls for the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants, are used by the organisation to support its case when campaigning to British Parliamentarians and other key stakeholders.
Every year, the Famagusta Association holds a memorial service to remember those, both those from Famagusta and Cyprus-wide, who died during the twin crimes in Cyprus of 1974. Remembering Famagusta is an crucial part of the organisation’s work and they regularly present photographic exhibitions to share memories of the city.
The Famagusta Association is a proud and active member of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK and participates in all Federation activities to further their joint campaign for a free, united Cyprus.
