Peter Droussiotis elected new president of UK National Federation of Cypriots

Prominent corporate financier and lawyer Peter Droussiotis has been elected the new President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK.
Droussiotis was elected at the Federation’s Annual General Meeting on 11th June 2007 with approximately 58% of the votes cast against his sole rival George Hajifanis.

The Federation is an organisation representing Cypriot community associations in the UK, many of which are “special purpose federations” themselves. It encapsulates the largest Cypriot community outside Cyprus estimated at approximately 300,000, the majority of whom live in North London and its surrounding areas.

The AGM unanimously re-elected to the posts of Vice-President Christodoulos Stylianou and Andreas Papaevripides and elected Michalis Kashis to the same post for the first time. George Hajifanis was elected unanimously Secretary of the Federation as was Ninos Koumetou to the post of treasurer.

Droussiotis told the gathering that the Federation had an important role to play in the UK, referring to the need to rally younger generations of British Cypriots to help in informing British and world public opinion about the continuing Turkish military occupation of Cyprus’ northern part.

He expressed deep gratitude to outgoing President Harry Sophoclides who had served for ten years in this post.

“I shall seek close cooperation with everybody who is in a position to help our goal to see a reunited, peaceful and really independent Cyprus for the benefit of all of the island’s legal inhabitants, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,” he added.

Droussiotis, 46, is a second generation British Cypriot and resides in Haringey, drugs online eu, North London.
