“Members of the APPG for Cyprus had a very productive meeting today with the Minister for Europe, Stephen Doughty MP. We discussed the cooperation and coordination of the UK with the Republic of Cyprus in keeping Cyprus, active British personnel, their families and British nationals safe during this evolving situation, as well as travel safety advice for nationals.”
This was stated, among other remarks, by Labour MP and Chair of the APPG, Bambos Charalambous. He also underlined that the UK Government assured them that “ it has taken the necessary measures to protect the security of Cyprus in conjunction with the Republic of Cyprus’ Government. A further meeting has been promised by the Minister should the situation change”, Mr Charalambous stressed.
Key points from Stephen Doughty’s remarks:
- RAF Akrotiri is not being used by US bombers.
- The United Kingdom is absolutely clear that Akrotiri is not included in any defensive action and that the US is not operating from Akrotiri.
- The United Kingdom’s utmost priority is the safety and defence of the base, as well as the security of Cyprus.
- There is contact and engagement at the highest level between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Cyprus, and the UK takes any threat to the island very seriously.
- There is continuous daily communication with the Republic of Cyprus, with President Christodoulides and Foreign Minister Kombos, who are in contact with the Prime Minister, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Defence Secretary John Healey and myself.
At the meeting, which took place in a room at the UK Parliament, the British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Matthew Tatham, intervened via video link. Among other points, he stated that the level of engagement from the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary had been extremely high and demonstrated the significance and priority attached to the security of Cyprus and the bases.
