Keynote Speakers
Professor Kypros Nicolaides was born in Paphos, Cyprus in 1953. He initially studied biochemistry and physiology followed by Medicine at King’s College London, graduating in 1978. He trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and in 1986 became the Director of the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, the first Fetal Medicine Unit in the United Kingdom. Under his guidance this has become a world leading centre of Fetal Medicine. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Fetal Medicine at King’s College London and has authored over 1500 peer-reviewed publications on Fetal medicine.
He is the Founder of the UK Charity, the Fetal Medicine Foundation set up in 1995. The Foundation has donated more than £45 million to support the training of doctors across the world as well as multi-centre research studies. His key discoveries include screening for premature birth, screening and reducing the risk of pre-eclampsia, screening for chromosomal abnormalities by measurement of nuchal translucency as well as endoscopic procedures such as laser surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in twin pregnancies or endoscopic treatment of severe diaphragmatic hernias. His life and work have been featured in documentaries such as “Life Before Birth” by the BBC and “The Surgeon’s Cut” by Netflix.
Professor Nicolaides’s awards include the recent election to the United States National Academy of Medicine, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III by the Republic of Cyprus, the Eardley Holland Gold Medal for outstanding contribution to the science, practice and teaching of Obstetrics & Gynaecology awarded by the RCOG and honorary doctorates from universities across the world.
Professor Agamemnon Epenetos qualified in medicine from Glasgow University, Scotland in 1973 and subsequently specialized in Medical Oncology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London where he held an Honorary Consultant appointment in Medical Oncology.
He has been a practicing Oncologist and Cancer Researcher over the last 30 years. He was, until recently, a visiting Professor at Imperial College London. He has published widely on novel cancer therapies and has received much international recognition.
Agamemnon has more than 20 years of experience as a biopharmaceutical industry executive. He founded (1988) and served (1990- 2001) as Chairman and R&D Director of Antisoma plc, an oncology-focused biotechnology company listed on the London Stock Exchange and now trading as Sarossa plc (sarossaplc.com). He co-founded (2001) and served as Chairman (2001-2004) of Lipoxen plc, a drug delivery and vaccine company listed on the AIM Market ( and now trading on NASDAQ as Xenetic Biosciences (www.xeneticbio.com). He also founded (2004) and served as President and CEO (2004-2007) of Somanta Inc. a US cancer therapeutics company listed on the USA OTC/BB. Somanta was acquired in 2007 by Access Pharma Inc., a cancer therapeutics company now trading on NASDAQ as Abeona Therapeutics (www.abeonatherapeutics.com). He co-founded Trojantec Ltd and Alexis Biotech Ltd cancer therapeutic companies, which unfortunately ceased business.
He founded and is chairing a private company Lifeline (www.lifeline.com.cy) a stem cell storage company developing regenerative medicine cell products.
Dr Despo Papachristodoulou is a Reader in Biochemistry and Medical Education, and a co-director of learning and teaching at King’s College London School of Medicine.
She has been Head of Preclinical Medicine from 1993-2017. She initially obtained her BSc in Biochemistry before completing an MSc in Nutrition and a PhD in Biochemistry all at the London University (UCL). She has co-authored a number of textbooks in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and her research and educational interests are in diabetes, metabolism, nutrition and medical education. With a colleague from King’s College London they created the curriculum for the University of Cyprus Medical School where she is still an external adviser.
George Vassiliou is Professor of Haematological Medicine at the University of Cambridge and a Cancer Research UK Senior Fellow. He is also member of Faculty at the Wellcome Sanger and Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institutes and a practicing Consultant Haematologist at Cambridge University Hospitals. He studied Medicine at the Royal London Hospital and trained in Haematology in London and Cambridge. He obtained his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2005 and then moved to the Wellcome Sanger Institute, where he did his postdoctoral studies and joined the Faculty in 2011, before moving to his current position in 2019. His team studies the pre-clinical evolution, molecular pathogenesis and treatment of myeloid malignancies. Highlights of their work include the co-discovery of the phenomenon of clonal haematopoiesis (CH) and the first demonstration that individuals at high risk of AML can be identified years in advance, opening the prospect of early detection of those at risk. His team also developed the first holistic diagnostic tools for myeloid cancers based on DNA (Karyogene) and RNA (RNAmut), identified hundreds of novel genetic vulnerabilities of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) through the first genome-wide CRISPR screen in a human cancer and isolated new therapeutic targets in AML including the genes METTL3, SRPK1, KAT2A and KAT7, for which inhibitors have now been developed. Furthermore, they have developed and studied several bespoke murine models of myeloid cancers (incl. NPM1, SF3B1 and UTX), which have given new insights into their pathogenesis. Work in the Vassiliou lab is funded by Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, European Research Council, Leukaemia Lymphoma Society, Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research, Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund, Blood Cancer UK, EMBO and the NIH-OxCam Scholars Program.
Professor Mamas Mamas is Professor of Cardiology at Keele University and clinical director of the centre for prognosis research whose research focuses around the use of routinely collected electronic healthcare data “big data” to study real-world outcomes in patients. He leads a large clinical research group utilising big data analytics at the population level using national / international electronic linked data from primary, secondary and tertiary care derived from upto 200 million patients. His research interests focus around granular longitudinal phenotyping of patients across healthcare providers, capturing clinical outcomes to develop prognosis tools for targeted precision medicine at the individual patient level. He has utilised big data to study the efficacy of treatments and their outcomes in high-risk patient populations around inflammatory diseases including those with cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis and diabetes. He has published over 475 peer reviewed publications (of which 338 have been in the past 5 years) and has a h-index of 57.
