Further Snapshots in Time – Cypriot Community in London, Then and Now

The Cyprus Centre of London Metropolitan University would like to announce their forthcoming exhibition. This event marks the Cyprus Centre’s return from Westminster University to London Metropolitan University. We will present an exhibition of archive and contemporary photographs depicting the history and present of the Cypriot Community in London and is an extended version of that presented in 2022 which was then curated with the Cyprus High Commission. The exhibition centres primarily on archive material gathered in 1987-1990 by Nigel Harris, juxtaposed with images depicting a modern revisiting of selected locations by Sebastian Rezai, together with select historical representations of the Cyprus Centre through the years.
In addition to the photographic exhibition, a rolling slideshow will tell the story of Cypriot emigration starting with the influx of Cypriots in the late 1920’s. The story continues through the decades with the primary focus being the 1980’s. At this juncture the community was concentrated primarily in Haringey, Camden and Islington. The exhibition and slideshow largely portrays the community in photographic form, showing Cypriots in action, whether in their work place or at places of leisure or worship. Women were visible as a vital part of the development of the community and are widely represented. These decades’ old building blocks have given rise to British-born Cypriots who enjoy thriving companies and can take their place amongst the tycoons and giants of British trade and industry.
