About
The Greek Cypriot Brotherhood was founded by His Eminence Archbishop Michael (born on 27 May 1892 in Maronia, Western Thrace), who served as spiritual leader of Greek Orthodox Christians in the Western Hemisphere from 1949 until his untimely death in 1958. His Eminence founded the Brotherhood in 1934, while serving as the Dean of the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in London (1927 -1939).
The Brotherhood is the oldest Cypriot association in Britain.
The Greek Cypriot Brotherhood has the following objectives:
- The promotion and preservation of the Christian and moral education of the members of the Brotherhood and in general of the Greek Cypriots of United Kingdom in a spirit of love, solidarity and cooperation.
- The spiritual cultivation of the members of the Brotherhood and of the Cypriots of the United Kingdom in general in culture, sciences and arts.
- The organization and promotion of events, performances, lectures, discussions on cultural, social, scientific and national issues related to Cyprus or Greece.
- The promotion of the spiritual and cultural relations of Cyprus with United Kingdom.
- Promotion and support of Greek schools in the United Kingdom and the promotion of Greek education, the learning of the Greek language, Greek and Cypriot history and the provision of scholarships.
- The creation and maintenance of a library with special emphasis on Greek and Cypriot books.
- The promotion and implementation of charitable activities with national and social purposes that serve the purposes of the Brotherhood.
The Brotherhood hosts a number of cultural and educational events.
The Brotherhood has its own premises in Barnet. The premises are used as a base for all its activities and are used for meetings and other functions. These premises are also used by the wider community. The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK is also housed at the premises.
