The UK Government has just formally carried over the EU sanctions framework on Turkey’s illegal drilling attempts in the Eastern Mediterranean. During the discussion on the issue in the House of Commons, James Cleverly MP, Minister of State (FCDO), and Stephen Doughty MP, Shadow Minister (FCDO), both underlined the importance of respecting the Republic of Cyprus’ sovereignty and right to exploit the resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
We welcome the framework, but are disappointed that two Turkish individuals named in the EU sanctions were removed from the UK sanctions list on 31st December 2020.
