On Thursday 11 April 2024, a delegation of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK met at the Cypriot High Commission in the UK, with the new High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Kyriacos Kouros. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy High Commissioner Spyros Miltiades and the General Consul Odysseas Odysseos.

The High Commissioner thanked the Federation representatives for their visit and stated that he strongly believes in engaging in dialogue that builds partnerships and allows for the honest exchange of views. He also praised the Federation for its many varied events, its long-standing struggles to end the Turkish occupation, and the promotion of the Cyprus issue in the UK, as he knows, he said, from his student days. He said that he considers himself fortunate to be working with such a familiar and long-standing organisation.

Federation President Christos Karolis welcomed Mr. Kouros and thanked him for the invitation to the High Commission. Mr Karaolis wished the High Commissioner every success in his work, stressing that both he and all members of the Federation will work closely with him for the effective promotion of Cyprus and the UK Cypriot community in Britain. The Federation representatives also briefed the High Commissioner on the challenges facing the diaspora, included those regarding Greek language education, difficulties relating to Brexit.

The meeting also led to an exchange of views on the upcoming UK General Election and the Cyprus issue, discussing the latest developments on the island and the important role of the UK in the expected resumption of talks. They all stressed that they will continue to work for a free, united Cyprus, with the only acceptable solution being one based on the agreed UN framework and in line with international law and the EU acquis.
