The Federation launched its #HandsOffCyprus 2025 campaign in June to mark 51 years since Turkey’s illegal invasion and ongoing occupation of Cyprus began in 1974. The campaign sent a clear message to MPs that, as a diaspora, the campaign for a free, united Cyprus continues.
This message comes at an especially important time, given the recent United Nations 5+1 meeting on Cyprus, which took place on 16 & 17 July in New York, at which Europe Minister Stephen Doughty MP was present. The Federation’s campaign resulted in UK Cypriots and friends sending #HandsOffCyprus emails to over 65% of MPs.
From Moray West, Nairn & Strathspey in the north, to Truro & Falmouth in the south, 423 MPs were contacted by their constituents about Cyprus. MPs from all nations of the UK reaffirmed their support for a solution to the Cyprus issue based on the agreed UN framework and in line with international law.
Federation President Christos Karaolis said that “Every year, it is a great source of pride for us that the UK Cypriot community demonstrates its continuing commitment to ending the illegal Turkish occupation of Cyprus through our #HandsOffCyprus campaign. Every one of us has a critical role to play to ensure that the Cyprus issue remains on the parliamentary agenda by engaging with our elected representatives. So, thank you to everyone who has made this year’s campaign a success.”
