On Thursday 3rd July a deeply moving and artistically powerful theatrical performance, “Letters to Freedom”, was hosted at the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood. The production, performed in Greek with English surtitles, was organised by the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in the UK, in collaboration with the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK.
This theatrical monologue was based on authentic letters, testimonies, and poems written by Cypriot fighters during the EOKA liberation struggle (1955–1959). The woman began as a simple postal worker, but gradually transformed in Freedom itself, through the powerful words of the young men who were executed. The performance unfolded in seven stances, inspired by the structure of Holy Week, guiding the audience on a spiritual and emotional journey from sacrifice to hope and resurrection.
The concept, direction, and curation were by Marios Theocharous, with Thelma Kassoulidou responsible for set and costume design. The monologue was sensitively and emotionally performed by Athena Savva.
The performance was attended by Mrs. Vasiliki Kinani Kourou, wife of the High Commissioner of Cyprus to the UK; Mr. Spyros Miltiades, Deputy High Commissioner; Ms. Stavroula Metaxa and Mr. Stephanos Constantinides from the Public Diplomacy and Communications Office of the Embassy of Greece; Ms. Eliza Antoniou from the Press and Information Office of the Cypriot High Commission, as well as Mr. Christos Karaolis, President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, and Federation Vice Presidents Mr. Andreas Papaevripides, Mr. Michalis Ellinas and Mr. Bambos Charalambous.
“Letters to Freedom” is not a play about death; it is a tribute to life, dignity, and hope. A powerful reminder that the struggle for freedom is not abstract; it has names, faces, and words that continue to move and inspire.
