Mr Karaolis then goes on to say that Cypriots will soon be marking the 52 years since Turkey’s illegal invasion and occupation of Cyprus began on July 20th 1974. In this time, he says, refugees have not been able to return to their homes, enclaved communities in the occupied area have lived in depravation and all Cypriots have had their human rights restricted.
In closing, Mr Karaolis stresses that the UK Cypriot community remains committed to a Free, United Cyprus, without occupying troops or the guarantor system. He adds that the community welcomes the new UN initiative on the Cyprus issue, that aims to help resume negotiations Mr Karaolis states that the UK Cypriots expect and urge the UK Government to continue their ministerial engagement with the Cypriot leadership and support Cyprus within the new UN initiative for a solution. This means that the UK must push for a solution to the Cyprus issue that is in line with the agreed UN framework, international law and EU acquis.
